Depression In Men

Depression in men is quite common. Do you know that more than three million men in the United States suffer from depression? However, only 35% of all men will recognize that they are suffering from it. The male image has prevented them from seeing themselves with this problem. They call themselves "the rock" or "the solid one". But the fact remains that men do suffer from depression. Moreover, men experiencing depression are not made less of a man because of it.

Do not hide your depression or try to cover it up with more problems. A lot of men try to cover up their true inner feelings by resorting to the use of drugs, sex, alcohol, work, and other things.  They hope to cover the feelings that are bothering them and hide their problems. They hope to get over their feeling of depression by focusing on something new. But, all they get in the end is more misery.

It is not so likely for men to seek depression treatment and it is not so likely for women to admit to the problem. But, if your family and friends support you, you should be able to find a solution to your frustrations.

Men tend to hide their inner feelings of depression. Some of them do it very well. Men usually want to be left alone and they do not normally reach out with their problems. Men tend to hide their depression because they usually feel shameful and fearful. Many people who have been close to a man who have committed suicide reported that they have no idea at all that this is going to happen. Most men are able to hide their feelings very well so much so that those around them will be surprised that such a thing can happen. Men usually fight depression alone in a silent battle.

How do you know when a man is suffering from depression? What are some depression symptoms to look for in a man? You may want to consider looking at his behavior. Do you see some drastic change in his behaviors? Does he seem to be oversleeping lately? Does he have problems sleeping when he was sleeping well before? Does he seem to be more tensed and stressed lately? Does his anger show more frequently now? These are some of the signs of depression to look out for.

However, do tread slowly when dealing with a man with depression. Never push them to seek depression treatment. If you do so, they may turn their uncontrollable anger at you. You may get hurt as a result although they may not mean to hurt you in the first place. They can become rather unpredictable because of their perceived need to cover up their depression.

If you really want to help someone to seek treatment, you should never push them to do it. Always let them make that decision to seek depression treatment. All you need to do is to tell them that you're worried about them. When you're dealing with this sort of issues that are rather sensitive, it is much better to talk less and listen more. You should always show your support for the person and tell him that you love and care about him frequently. Always let him know that both of you are in this together. He is not fighting the battle alone.

You'll now more prepared to help him overcome depression. This is because you've a better knowledge about depression in men.
