Question: Is talk therapy with a legitimate, certified therapist and marijuana a cure for depression?
(Posted by: ggilu on 2009-05-16 13:44:37)
I don't think marijuana is a cure for depression but other pharmaceuticals such as effexor, paxil, abilify (sp?) have not helped my depression. Talk therapy helps immensly. Talk therapy with a psychiatrist or therapist in conjunction with marijuana smoked in the morning helps me feel so much better. Can marijuana be viewed as another form of antidepressant and/ or anti- anxiety meds.?

Marijuana is more or less a downer. It will not help help depression. There's a small chance it can help with anxiety but in some people it actually creates a lot of anxiety.

Actualy prolonged use of marijuana can lead to depression. It's probably the therapy thats making you feel better.

No marijuana would most likely feel more depressed, because you only feel good when you are high and so when youre not high you get depressed and what not.

On one hand, if something is working for you then great, continue with it! On the other hand, weed is a depressant which in the long run will probably not help very much with your depression. Yes, it will aid in anxiety but if you rely on it too much it has the capabilities of becoming addictive, just like any other medication. I would say ask you therapist what they think and go from there.

It's unwise to ask people on here what to prescribe yourself. Especially since your depression is so immense (effexor, paxil, abilify not working) I think you just want an excuse to get stoned of your rocker every night. its a good pitch, but not in the slightest effective. Even if you do smoke it, or planning to take it up, it may make depression even worse or give you paranoia. Marijuana is mainly for those suffering immense physical pain.

People don't know what they're talking about. All the people who said no probably have never heard of the terms sativa or indica. Cannabis sativa is a stimulant, and upper if you will. Indica is a sedative, drowsy type of weed. Indica would be horrible for you, but Sativa would help. Most strains of marijuana are hybrids, so look for one that's dominantly sativa. If the people you're getting it from don't know, you don't know, and you can be playing with fire. This is why legalizing it would help. There's so many misconceptions and myths it's unbelievable 12 inch fallacy: lol funny name by the way, but you kind of forgot to mention that pill form is ineffective and smoking has such a higher rate of effectiveness. Your talking about marinol. It's just stupid, they made it in an effort to quiet down the advocates like me, but made it so there's sooooo much paperwork, that doctors don't even want to bother with it. = )

Marijuana use has the tendency to mask deeper emotional problems during counseling. Thus, it makes it hard for you to come to terms with whatever problems you have when you're sober. This is only a good combination if you plan to be smoking pot for the rest of your life. THC and Cannabidiol (both psychoactive cannabinoids in marijuana) are great for depression and anxiety, but they can easily be abused for escapism purposes. To deter this, the best approach for administration is in pill form, allowing for slow release and constant effect. If only it was more decriminalized, THC pills would be much easier to get a hold of. In the near future, keep your eyes out for Sativex, and ask your doctor if Sativex is right for you!
