As we learn the way we think originally from our parents, then is can seem to be passed down, but if you are the son, and are afraid you will get the same illness, study positive thinking, and you can insure yourself against depression. I am diagnosed as bi polar, but I am very fortunate not to get depressed, I only go high. My highs have caused me problems through. |

Doesn't matter if it's father to son. mother to son. father to daughter. mother to daughter. i'm bipolar, my mom has depression problems and someone in her family was bipolar. it can skip your mother or father and go straight to you if one of their siblings had it or their parents. |

Yes. There are higher rates of depression in people who have a family history of it. Genetics play a role, but also is the enviroment (if the father acts depressed around the son). Also, not everyone who has depression has a family history of it. |

Some of mental health problem can be genetic, but not very frequent. However, mental health issues are often caused by your childhood experience, and if someone close to you suffer from depression or other mental health issues, you witnessing to high and low's of that person is likely to trigger some mental health problem. My father suffer from seasonnal depression, a cousin (who my parent unofficially foster) killed himself after suffering of bi-polar (very violent up and lows), his mother did too (but i was only 3 at the time). Not surprising I'm Borderline Personality disorder, but i beleive more because what i lived and seen, rather than the genes. But this do NOT mean you/ your son will be affected. Everyone is so different |
