Physical sign of depression?!?

Question: Physical sign of depression?!?

(Posted by: collegegirl on 2009-02-02 18:01:58)

If you are talking to someone that you believe may possibly be depressed, what physical signs should you look for? i'm not reffering to cutting and stuff like that i more mean body language, like fidgeting or lack of eye contact? what signs would a person suffering from depression possibly give with their body language?? (in reference to a teenager, not child or adult) i need it for a project and all i find online is the typical tearfulness, angry, detattched stuff. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!

For me it was things like gazing into space (day dreaming or thinking hard) with a kind of sad look. A kind of slump, sitting with my back slouched and generally looking like I had no energy. No big or excited hand gestures when talking. But the stuff you mentioned you found online really are stuff real people get.

Fatigue, restlessness, loss of appetite. Usual sadness, (but sometimes people who seem normal are depressed) loss of concentration. These are harder things to see physically par say, but they are things you can see if you look.

People who are depressed are usually more inactive than normal, so they'd look like they've been sleeping a lot. Maybe dark circles under the eyes. Maybe yawning a lot. The way you'd feel after sitting in front of the TV all day. They don't care as much about their appearance, so a girl who used to dress and accessorize carefully, spend a lot of time on hair and makeup, but now doesn't, it could be because of depression. I would think a really depressed person might look at the floor a lot. They might not get outdoors as much so they'd look really pale. Stuff like that. Lack of eye contact is a good guess too.

We just watched video today at school about this if i were you i would look for things that are very off about this person EX: like if the person was really happy but now is sad all of a sudden. but if they are fidgeting and lack of contact they could be depressed but i don't really know about this because i am not an expert on it i hope that helped a little bit

Avoiding eye contact, fatigue, pale skin, thinner or heavier body than usual, poor hygiene, puffy eyes (from crying), hair loss(from stress), and slouched body position.
